First Upgrades on a 5.9 Magnum: Where the Cheap Horsepower Hides

The 5.9 Magnum might be the most underrated cheap-horsepower platform in the truck world. Dodge built millions of them, they're everywhere for short money, and one specific upgrade wakes them up harder than almost any single part on any engine I can name. Here's the honest path.

What you're starting with

A '98–'03 5.9 Magnum is rated 245 net horsepower and 335 lb-ft. That's a healthy starting point, and the heads deserve most of the credit: the Magnum head is a 60cc closed-chamber design that flows around 209 cfm — genuinely decent iron, better than anything the old LA engines got from the factory. The block is the same basic 360 Chrysler had been building for decades. The weak link is somewhere else entirely.

The cam is the cork

The factory hydraulic roller cam in a Magnum is tiny — sized for idle quality, emissions, and towing manners, not power. That makes it the single biggest dollar-per-horsepower target on the platform. Richard Holdener ran the test that proves it: a mild 212/218-at-.050 hydraulic roller swap on a dressed 5.9 picked up 49 horsepower on his dyno. One cam. Forty-nine horsepower. There is no other bolt-in part on this engine that comes close.

Do the springs at the same time — not optional

The stock Magnum valve springs float around 5,500 RPM, and a cam that moves the power up the RPM range will run straight into that ceiling. Spring upgrades on a Magnum have a quirk worth knowing before you shop: the factory retainers and the oiling-through-the-pushrods rocker setup mean you buy a spring kit matched to the Magnum specifically, not a generic small block Mopar kit. The good news: a Magnum cam swap is done with the heads on, and springs swap with an on-head compressor and compressed air holding the valves up. Cam, springs, and matching pushrods go in as one weekend job, not a winter project.

Then breathing — in that order

After cam and springs, the usual bolt-ons do what they always do, in honest amounts: headers are worth real power on a cammed engine (figure 12–15 HP on a mild build, more as the engine grows), a proper intake helps the Magnum breathe up top, and a tune or carb-swap conversion ties it together. The order matters: headers and intake on the stock cam are polishing a cork. Pull the cork first.

Mind the Magnum-vs-LA parts trap

The Magnum ('93–'03) and the older LA 360 ('71–'92) are the same basic block with completely different top ends, and the aftermarket will happily sell you the wrong parts. LA intakes bolt on at roughly 45 degrees; Magnum intake bolts go in vertically — the intakes do not interchange, period. Magnum rockers oil through the pushrods; LA rockers oil through the block. Every head, intake, rocker, and pushrod decision has to match the pattern you actually have. (We wrote a whole guide on the LA-vs-Magnum split — it's the most expensive confusion on the platform.)

The honest ceiling for a weekend-wrencher 5.9

Cam, springs, headers, intake, and a good tune on an otherwise-stock 5.9 lands you around 300–320 honest horsepower with a fat truck-friendly torque curve — a completely different vehicle from the 245-horse starting point, for cam-kit money. Past that, you're into heads or the 408 stroker conversation, and the dollars start climbing a much steeper hill.

Which one to start with

If you're shopping for a donor, the '98–'03 trucks and Durangos are the sweet spot — the later Magnums carry the 245-horse rating, and the earlier '93–'97 engines gave up a little power to earlier intake and tuning (figure around 230). Skip the 5.2 unless it's free: everything that makes the Magnum worth building — the heads, the roller cam, the aftermarket — works harder for you on the 5.9's extra cubes, and the build costs the same either way. High-mileage Magnums are everywhere; a compression check and an oil-pressure reading tell you most of what you need to know before money changes hands.
